2026 Irving & Klohn Families Symposium on Vascular Complications of Portal Hypertension

Multidisciplinary overview of complications of portal hypertension presented through case presentations, focused lectures, and panel discussions to address critical clinical topics in this patient population.

1. Understand pathophysiology and clinical presentation of vascular complication of portal hypertension.
2. Critically evaluate ICU management strategies for severe variceal bleeding, including resuscitation protocols, pressor support, and the role of balloon tamponade devices and endotracheal intubation in hemodynamic stabilization.
3. Compare and contrast endoscopic interventional modalities for esophageal and gastric variceal hemostasis including banding, cyanoacrylate injection, EUSguided coiling, and esophageal stent placement.
4. Assess interventional radiology approaches such as TIPS, BRTO, portal vein thrombectomy, and variceal embolization, emphasizing criteria for TIPS candidacy and factors influencing portal vein occlusion management.
5. Apply evidencebased anticoagulation algorithms for portal vein thrombosis in cirrhotic patients, integrating stewardship principles and multidisciplinary decisionmaking to balance thrombosis prevention with bleeding risk.
6. Identify surgical and transplant considerations in advanced portal hypertension, including indications for surgical shunts and emergent liver transplantation.
