Overview
Preparedness for Psychiatric Emergencies is a multidisciplinary, simulation-based educational activity designed to prepare healthcare professionals to safely recognize and respond to patients experiencing agitation or escalating behavioral distress. Through brief didactic content, immersive standardized patient scenarios, and facilitated debriefing, participants will practice early identification of escalation cues, verbal de-escalation techniques, team communication, role clarity, and collaborative decision-making. The course emphasizes patient-centered, trauma-informed approaches and aims to strengthen confidence and teamwork in managing psychiatric emergencies while promoting strategies that may help reduce the need for physical or chemical restraints.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. By the end of the course, learners will identify at least three early behavioral or verbal signs of patient agitation that may indicate escalation and the need for timely verbal deescalation.
  2. By the end of the course, learners will demonstrate at least three evidencebased verbal deescalation strategies during a simulated patient encounter to reduce agitation and support patient safety without immediate use of restraints.
  3. By the end of the course, learners will demonstrate effective interprofessional communication and collaboration during a simulated agitated patient encounter by using verbal deescalation strategies and clearly communicating roles, concerns, and next steps.
